All battery manufacturers are using the spiralling price of lead to justify monthly substantial increases in the price of batteries. Salutary lesson
The following conversation was overheard on the golf course recently
Traditional garage Owner: We are finding business very thin at present. In fact I would have to say I can't remember it being so quiet.
Progressive garage owner: Really that's odd, we are quite busy. What diagnostic equipment do you use?
Traditional garage owner: Oh, we don't need those machines we don't touch modern cars after 2000.
Progressive garage owner: Well that is cutting out over half of your potential market. What do you do about diesels?
Traditional garage owner: We won't touch those either. They are a minefield.
Progressive garage owner: That used to be the case but diesel faults can now be diagnosed easily and quickly with the right equipment. It's no wonder that you don?'t have any business. You are eliminating 80% of the aftermarket before you start. Also every time you turn business away you are sending a negative message to potential customers as well.
Traditional garage owner: But what can I do about it. I don't like computers and haven't even got email?
Progressive garage owner: You have got to get over these silly bigotries. I didn't want to use computerised equipment either but I was surprised at how easy they are to use. It quickly made me realize that there is nothing clever about what the main dealers do. Once I have diagnosed the problem there are still some jobs that I cannot do myself but I have a network of other garages that I subcontract these jobs to. Our business has grown from strength to strength since we stopped turning jobs away.
Traditional garage owner: But isn't this diagnostic kit expensive and I have heard that it goes out of date as soon as you buy it?
Progressive garage owner: If you get it on a lease deal it just works out at a few pounds per week and if that is the cost of filling up your workshop it is a small price to pay.
